Default Inspiron, XPS and Vostro Laptops now with Intel Penryn CPUs from Dell UK

The Intel Penryn processor is now available with the Inspiron 1720, XPS M1330, XPS M1730, Vostro 1400, 1500 and 1700 laptops from Dell UK.

Now we just have to wait for the XPS M1530...........

The "Penryn" CPU is another in Intel's line of "Core 2" processors and the first fabricated using its 45nm die technology.

Currently the only Penryn processors available from Intel are the:

T8100 2.1GHz, 3MB L2 Cache
T8300 2.4GHz, 3MB L2 Cache
T9300 2.5GHz, 6MB L2 Cache
T9500
2.6GHz, 6MB L2 Cache

These new processors from Intel offer modest battery life increases and modest performance improvements over the Intel Core 2 Duo processors which use the 65nm die technology

Has anyone noticed what difference have the new processors made to prices on the Dell models above? I am about to buy and XPS M1530 but would preferably wait for a new processor, however at present my budget is maxed out at a T7000 range processor, so if the T9000 range is going to push the cost higher I will just buy now, or has it been pretty much a direct replacement for the 7000 range? Although there would be benefits in heat and battery life in an 8000 series from what I have read, it looks like the performance is not quite as high as the current 7000 series.

I am presuming here that the T8000 is essentially a replacement for the T5000 range and the T9000 range replacing the T8000?

Comparing the latest XPS M1330 deals to the week before the Penryns were available the prices are actually more or less the same for the equivalent systems. (Does that make sense??)

For example, mid February the XPS M1330 top spec default configuration had the Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 (2.20 GHz), 3072GB RAM, 320 GB Hard drive and came out at £949.

This week the top spec default XPS M1330 with the Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 (2.40 GHz), 3072GB RAM, 320 GB Hard drive comes out at £949.

But the important things in this case is that the T8300 runs faster and cooler than the T7500 plus you would see an increase in battery life.

Thanks, still trying to get my head around the Penryn processors though, the T7500 was 800mhz FSB and 4mb L2 Cache whereas the T8300 is 800mhz and only 3mb L2 cache. I had thought that it was the T9000 range which was directly replacing the T7000 range. The side by side comparisons I have found were T7000 v T9000 and it saw a marginal improvement in the Penryns, have you seen a T7000 v T8000 comparison anywhere?

Out of interest I spoke to someone on Dell chat today who told me that they processors would be "some time" on the M1530. Though given the mixed experience I have of the advisors on there it wouldnt surprise me if after saying that they turn up on the site tomorrow.....

I know it is a struggle to find any decent comparisons and benchmarks for the Penryn cpus. The best I have found so far is this: Inside Mobile Penryn

The XPS M1530 can now be ordered with a Penryn processor from the Dell GB website.

See our our XPS M1530 deal listings to check out the pricing.
