Default Inspiron 17r versus XPS 15

I still haven't purchased the Inspiron 17r (NOON7018)I've been looking at for some months now. The reason being, I've been waiting for a voucher code or other offer for the core i5 500gb hard drive version that I'd like, but as yet nothing has been forthcoming (apart from 15 months McAfee). This machine is currently priced at £679.00 and I'm tempted to buy.

However, when I looked on the Dell website today I notice that they are now offering £199.00 off the new Dell XPS 15 Laptop (NOOXL511) a machine which also has a Core i5 processor and a bigger 640GB hard drive for £649.00!

As I intend to use the machine as a replacement for an elderly desktop PC I wonder if I am allowing my preference for a wider screen to blind me to a really good purchase with the XPS. I'd be grateful for any opinions/advice.

Thank you

Personally I would go for the XPS 15 rather than the Inspiron 17. The XPS 15 has been getting some great reviews and is a very popular laptop.

However you can get the same screen size and resolution as the Inspiron 17 for just a few pounds more if you go for the XPS 17 N00XL759 at £699 (£665 if you use the dell coupon F6GX$F46PT34SC in your shopping basket).

This comes with the Intel Core i5 460M 2.53GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB Hard Drive, 1GB Nvidia Geforce GT 435M graphics card, a 17.3in HD+ WLED (1600X900) 900p screen and JBL speakers. Also bear in mind that this laptop is the latest technology from Dell.

Hi Paul,

Thank you very much for your advice. I think I'll go for the XPS.

However, before making my final decision I came across the Studio XPS 17(N00XL703). Is this different to the XPS 17 (N00XL759) you suggested? Are they both up to the minute models and if so which one would you suggest I chose? (The code you sent works with both machines.) Thanks for your help so far.

Hi,

N00XL703 is £30 more than N00XL759 but it comes with Lojack theft recovery and a free anti virus upgrade.

N00XL759 has a bluetooth module as standard where with N00XL703 you would need to add it as a £30 upgrade if you required it.

Both are cracking deals and both are the same brand new model from Dell.

If you need any more advice, please ask.

Hi again,

Thank you very much indeed for your advice. I think I'm going to purchase today. I'll use the code you provided, but also wondered if there's any scope for say free delivery by placing the order over the telephone - any idea?

Thank you

Hi,

No, I doubt very much you will gain anything from calling them. The discount coupon is only valid for online purchases anyway.

Regards

Hi,

Having watched The Apprentice earlier this week, I gave Dell a ring just to chance my arm and see if they could do just a bit more on price. The gentleman I spoke to said he could offer me something if I was prepared to buy, say additional cover, or a printer, anything really to push the price above £750.00 (he didn't seem too impressed that my only extra was the system restore disk at £5.00!) I don't know what he would then have been able to offer me, but a budget is a budget and I pressed the button to buy the machine you recommended at a price I am pleased with.

Thank you for your help Paul, I shall recommend your site to others looking to make a similar purchase.

Hi,

That is a normal tactic when you call, they will always try to up sell you as I guess the phone operators will get extra commission the more they sell.

Anyway, I am glad you enjoyed the site and found it useful. That is a fine machine you have bought and I am sure you will be very happy with it.

Thanks for the support by buying through dmxdimension.
