i have a dell inspiron (about 18months old) with 1gb of ram, its made up of 2x500mb, ive just bought a new inspiron desk top with 3gb ram, i think its 2x1gb and 2x500mb. Does a desktop and a laptop use the same kind of ram and if so would i be able to swap them around so i have 2gb of ram in both my computers? use the 2x1gb in the laptop, and 4x500mb in the desktop?

Hi,
laptop and desktop memory is not interchangeable... it is physically different in size. Also note there are numerous versions of ram depending on hardware, age, chipset etc. Best place to get ram that is guaranteed to work (and cheaper than going to Dell) is to go to Memory upgrades, flash media, and usb storage at Crucial.com and select your model of PC from options or use their 'scanner' to check what a PC can accept for upgrades. |
